Understanding combat modes in RuneScape - Full Manual, Revolution, and Legacy

RuneScape offers three combat modes that determine how your abilities are activated. Your choice here significantly impacts your gameplay experience.

  • Full Manual: You manually activate all abilities
  • Revolution: Abilities are automatically cast in order from your action bar
  • Legacy: The old auto-attack system (not recommended)

Legacy mode should be avoided as the modern game is balanced around using abilities.

Full Manual Action Bar Revolution Action Bar

Full Manual

Full Manual gives you complete control over your abilities. Nothing fires unless you press it.

Auto Attack (Necromancy Only)

Toggles whether the Necromancy basic attack will auto-cast when no other ability is pressed. Most newer players will want this enabled.

Revolution

Revolution automatically casts abilities in the order they appear on your action bar. The damage and effects are identical to Full Manual, but requires less input.

Revolution Size

Set this to the number of slots Revolution can use. Generally, this should cover most abilities on your bar.

Which Abilities to Include

As a recommendation, only place basic abilities within your Revolution bar slots. This lets the game handle your basics while you manually cast enhanced and ultimate abilities as needed.

This approach is a great way to learn combat without getting overwhelmed. For a more relaxed experience like AFK Slayer, you can include enhanced and ultimates in your Revolution bar as well, but this is not advised for active bossing.

Magic Settings

Auto-select Magic Spell

Keep this disabled. It can cause issues if the wrong spell is automatically selected.

To manually select a spell, open your Magic spellbook and click the desired spell. Select "Set main hand and offhand" if prompted.
